2.4 GHz Intel C2D, 3GB RAM, ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro 256MB

running OSX 10.7.5

All of a sudden my fan speed is going nuts. It has never been anywhere near this loud in 5 years of using this computer.

I did some google searches and found some issues related to Mountain Lion or when installing an SSD.

I'm not running mountain lion, and I haven't changed anything on the computer.

I tried to reset the SMC via instructions from a website, but I'm not sure if it worked. If it did work, then it had no effect.

iStat pro only shows my HD under temps for some reason. It also doesnt display the fan section despite setting the preferences to show. This part is kind of weird because it was showing all temps and all fan speeds before trying the SMC reset.

The computers fan starts this way immediately upon startup. Under 10% cpu usage etc.

The back of the computer feels completely cool.

Any ideas on this?

An internal temperature sensor may have failed. The machine is in fail safe mode with the fans at the maximum to prevent damage.
