Smart home company Eve today announced the launch of the Eve Dimmer Switch, the company's first smart light switch replacement with dimming functionality. The Dimmer Switch replaces a traditional light switch and it can be used with standard bulbs and lights that have dimming functionality.

The Dimmer Switch has a rocker for turning lights on or off, along with touch support for incremental dimming control. It connects to HomeKit using Matter-over-Thread, and it can be controlled with the Eve app, the Apple Home app, or with Siri voice commands.

As with all HomeKit devices, automations are supported, and the Dimmer Switch can be paired with other smart home products. Remote control is available, and with Matter support, people in your home that use Android can also control the switch. You will need a hub for whichever platform you connect to, so for Apple HomeKit, the HomePod, HomePod mini, and Apple TV are Matter hubs.

Eve recommends that only electricians install the Eve Dimmer Switch because knowledge of electrical wiring is required. The switch needs a neutral wire and can replace a single-pole or 3-way switch. With a 3-way switch setup, only one switch in the circuit needs to be replaced.

The Dimmer Switch can be purchased from the Eve website for $50, and it will ship to customers in the United States and Canada in mid-March.

Does it require Internet/cloud connectivity? Or can it run on a private LAN that has no external connectivity?

I'd love to control my lights from all over my house, but I don't want any possibility for someone on the outside to have any access.

It does not require internet connectivity.

It connects privately using the Matter protocol over the Thread network.

All you need is a Thread border router, like the Apple TV 4K (128GB) or HomePod mini, or one from another company.

How is this any better or worse than the competition? Lutron has been in this game for a while, and I was hoping more competition would bring prices down, but so far no dice.

FINALLY. Good grief been waiting for this for years.

Their Thread Switch is rock solid and has not needed to be touched once since it was first setup. That's all I'm looking for. Unlike Leviton Decora which can't even reconnect to WiFi after an outage.

I've also been waiting on Thread to go full in on these types of products
Thread really delivers on its promise. It works so well. Always fast and responsive, always online, never needs babysitting. If cost and time were not a factor, I would replace all 20+ Decora Smart Dimmers in a heartbeat with these. As it is, I will start replacing them one at a time as they fail, because they do, every few months.

It may be obvious to some but can it be used for a ceiling fan? I hate how they lock their switches name now as “Light” even if I want to use it for a fan.
This is a Dimmer. So you wouldn't use that for a fan. They already have a Switch, which can be used just fine for a fan.

I'm sold! I have two Thread enabled smart plugs and you are spot on
They are super reliable, responsive and flexible to interact with

If that's what you want, you don't need dimmer functionality. The existing Eve "Light" Switch works just fine.

I have one controlling the extractor fan in my house; HomeKit runs it automatically every night from 2am to 5am forcing a "refresh" of the house air while I'm sleeping.

And yes, what people say is true. Some Eve products have been disappointing, but their Switches are worth the cost; they are expensive but also ridiculously reliable, just working without a hassle, year after year.

Not in Nanoleaf it doesn't...

If you want your Thread network to stay working well, NEVER pollute it with any Nanoleaf products. You have been warned...

Sounds like a pain in the neck. I have seven Leviton switches and have never experienced that. I do, however, I have one Leviton dimmer switch which seems to be failing. I have several Lutron's and they have been very solid.

EDIT to add - Doesn't look like you can currently purchase one from the Eve website. I can't seem to get it to work.

I like Eve and own several of their products. However, when it comes to devices that require installation, I prefer hub-based options like Lutron. Hubs eliminate the need to flip the circuit breaker to troubleshoot, as they can be restarted if the device fails to connect to HomeKit.

Another advantage of Lutron Caseta switches is their reliability over the past 7 years of my usage. While they may be more expensive, that speaks volumes, especially now that their newer switches look much nicer.

It’s worth noting that Thread is a more resilient technology, which would make Eve a top choice if I were to abandon Lutron. I dislikes their prominent branding on the switch though.

I came to post the same thing! Smart-Food? 🤣
Maybe the two can go hand in hand. Smart Switch + Smart Food = Smart Food Switch. It's a switch that tells Siri to cook and she will serve you something you didn’t even ask for. ;) /s

I don’t understand why they don’t make these light switches with motion detectors built in like Kasa or Lutron? Why does EVE need another separate device for that to work? Really like Eve stuff, but they are behind the times on some things, like built in motion sensing, outdoor compatible smart plugs, etc…

How about a UK release? For some reason the non dimmer version has never been available over here, only option is importing from the EU for £100+ per switch

This sounds like a great product for many people. However, I'll stick with my Lutron Caseta Diva dimmers. I love having a physical slider to change the dimming. Plus Lutron uses ClearConnect in the 434 MHz band. It's a wide open band with no interference, and it goes through walls really well. I have 50+ Lutron products in my house, and they are the most rock solid products in my HomeKit setup.

You can get a Kasa Homekit dimmer for about half that. I just installed one and it worked perfectly from the git-go.

Lutron Caseta has been in this game for a long while and has been rock solid. Majority of my house runs on this and Philips Hue. Never had an issue and have most everything automated. In order to compete I would be hoping these would be in the $30 range.

Now bring it to Germany in a normed form, please. (circular, 68mm in the wall) This fits nowhere in Germany. Don't know about the rest of Europe.
