ColorWare, known for its custom painted Apple devices and accessories, today added to its ColorWare Retro Collection with AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods 4 options designed to look like classic Macs.

The AirPods are available in Light Mode, a matte cream color, or Dark Mode, a matte black shade. Both models have the colorful rainbow accents that Apple used for some of its original Macs.

ColorWare's Retro AirPods Pro 2 are priced at $499, while the AirPods 4 with ANC are priced at $439. ColorWare uses a proprietary painting process that ensures the finish holds up over time, and it makes AirPods and other custom painted devices in a wide range of colors.

Aside from the custom painting, the AirPods Pro 2 and the AirPods 4 are identical in performance and feature set to standard AirPods.

The new Retro AirPods join ColorWare's Mac mini Retro line that launched in January.

The attempt at using Snow White design language doesn't work on these, IMO.

The colors are dope but this is pretty much DOA based on those prices.
You know someone with more money than sense will buy them.

And I know someone will see this post and say, "who are you to tell people what to do with their money, huh??" (hrumph, hurmph).

And I agree. Spend your money however you want, baby! (but secretly you know you just wasted a ton of dough).

My bigger issue is that AirPods Pro 3 are likely coming this fall. Spending $499 on a model soon to be replaced is even sillier.

Im a wealthy industrialist, philanthropist, and keen purveyor of the finer things in life. I am busy acquiring and divesting fortunes, shaping industries, and, indeed, buying and selling men like myself as one might trade in fine silks or rare antiquities and yet even I was momentarily taken aback when I laid eyes upon a $499 price tag. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have an exclusive luncheon at the club, where deals worth more than your yearly earnings will be sealed over a plate of imported oysters. Good day.

Things like this and the retro Mac mini they also make should signify to apple that there is at least a small market of people that think it is ok to look back at the past every now and then. The six colors wallpaper in iOS is a small nod. the new Macintosh screensaver in sequoia was a pleasant nostalgic surprise.

im holding out hope that on 4/1/26 on the 50th anniversary of Apple that there will be some sort of surprise computer that is a nod to the past.

BUT, considering the Mac’s 40th birthday was acknowledged with only a tweet from Cook I don’t want to get my hopes up too much.

These are dope but $499 is strong arm robbery. Plus I'm WAY past that age where I would easily justify the cost to spend money like that in the name of uniqueness. My silicone protective case that looks like a travel sized TSA approved bottle of Vaseline is unique enough for me.

Not impressed with the colours and also the very high prices associated with them. Not sure how many will order these products.

It's nice, but apart from the price being a concern, they also do not capture the spirit of the old Apple design.
The colors yes, but Apple in old days would not have placed a giant Apple logo on the topof the device.
There would have been a small embossed plastic logo embedded in the lower corner and a small plastic label with the model name embedded next to it.

Have a look at any of the Maintoshes in the 1990s (particular the pizza box LC / Performas) to see it.

I miss the old colorful Apple logo, but that will not come. The rainbow now means something completely different and its not like anyone is getting it back.

That Mac Mini does look pretty cool

So true... The first thing that came into my mind was the line: "Jeez, you're just going to so want one"
This came from the Apple Powerbook G4 ad from 2001. Gave me goose bumps, both the ad and the Mac itself when I got it.

I would have ordered that coloured M4 mini too, if had not already bought the Mac mini M4 pro.

For old times' sake:

Love that white pair, but I could never justify that price. Especially when the AirPods Pro 3 are right around the corner.

As much as I love these, (and I do), I hate to be the one to lose one and have to get the normal replacement side at the Apple Store. My OCD would sob softly in the corner.
