On this week's episode of The MacRumors Show, we discuss the rumored look of the iPhone 17 "Air" and iPadOS 19's major productivity update.

We take a closer look at the rumored design of the iPhone 17 "Air," which is expected to introduce a radically thinner design. It is rumored to be as thin as 5.5mm, versus the 8.725mm thickness of the Pro models. It has now emerged that even the buttons will need to be thinner than those used on the other models to simply fit on the device.

We also discuss the rumored "Sky Blue" color option for the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, which bears a resemblance to the "Sierra Blue" of the iPhone 13 Pro. Sky Blue was first introduced on the M4 MacBook Air earlier this year. Moreover, we talk through the purported "Midnight" colorway for the Apple Vision "Air."

Meanwhile, iPadOS 19 is expected to bring a major software upgrade to the iPad. The update is expected to make the iPad more "macOS-like," with improved productivity, multitasking, and window management. I don’t get it, why repeating in a video what has passed here since weeks… “listen to us talk (for the ones that can’t read) I’m missing the added value.

Watching all this speculation is ridiculous and some of it is actually coming true in just over a month :D Looks like Gurman, Prosser and other bs reporters speculate a lot on top of what they get from our leakers, so they hit or miss their predictions and versions assumptions for each launch. Needless to say, it is all thanks to the Vision OS Team that started the new trend for our iOS and iPad OS developments for the next three gens!!!

Note: I have checked out of the Apple camp because Apple refuses to do a "Thinkpad Yoga" MBP device which is IMHO the perfect portable/PC/Pad device. They can do this, but refuse to do so. Based on many comments/complaints I have read, this is a great solution for many customers (flame away).

This video with Dan/H is the result. Apple fan-bois (which I am pretty sure Dan is, not so sure about H.) cannot fathom that what Jobs said about Xerox/IBM now applies to Apple: "...no feeling in their hearts about wanting to really help customers." Instead they argue "...it meets my needs". If that statement covered the market, why change iPadOS ?? Think about it Dan (and improve your camera blur settings).

Apple will absolutely not do a MacOS 2-in-1 device because (my guess) this would: A) Cannabalize the sale of 2 devices (iPad -- MBP) for folks needing a 2-in-1, and B) Allow 2-in-1 owners to take advantage of MacOS ability to load apps outside of the App Store. This link explains Steve's thoughts about such a decision:

What makes me most sad is that Apple -- if it decided to create the ultimate 2-in-1 device -- is just a few man-months away from the ultimate solution. I long for the Mac Air line to provide 2-in-1. Just change the hinge, provide a touch-screen and pencil support. You are done. (Prior to the flames: I run Unbuntu on a old Thinkpad Yoga -- it is nearly perfect as a 2-in-1 so how hard would it be to optimize MacOS for touch ?? I mean Ubuntu was hardly optimized for the Yoga.)

Anyway... Pissing into the wind. We know Dan/H will debate this in the future as Tim & Co. make all product decisions based on "services revenues" much like Steve noted "Toner-Heads" drove Xerox into decline.

Toner-Heads: Apple's entrenched board/C-Level execs who cannot envision how moving away from the App Store, taking advantage of Apple's amazing hardware engineering, and how how "...their hearts about wanting to really help customers" applies might be a means to long-term success. (We know quarter-to-quarter results favor current approach).

HTH, and I am done thinking Apple will ever again (near term) inspire me. "Think Different" needs to come back.

I'm glad this show took a break from the AI discussion this week. I have an Ipad Air and find I don't use it very much. I would love to find more uses for it (I always say I want to use it as a book reader and it's hard to motivate me to read books). I still wish Apple would make Apple Books into a library service so you can "check out" books and not have to buy them. I think I would pay for such a service.

I’m not terribly fond of MacOS, iPadOS is perfect for me. It’s my daily driver & I’m typing on its surface right now. I use my iPad Pro 11” M4 for 90% of what I do online. No case or keyboard/trackpad. I use my iPhone less than my Apple Watch Ultra & I use HomePods more than I do my watch (it’s great to listen to white noise as I sleep). 💤

I'm using my 6th iPad (9,7") just as a music sheet reader. It's really hard to justify, for my specific use, buying a larger iPad since the app I use is cross-platform (MobileSheets Pro). Air 13" starts at 970 euros; a comparable Samsung at exactly half the price. I would love to see some app on the iPad (but I don't even know what I want 😅) that can be able to makes me change my mind...

I have/use Mac and iPad Pro. Using the Pencil is what most differentiates Mac from iPad. I don't need my iPad Pro to be more like Mac OS.

Split view is good on iPad. It could have one more option...quad view.

Editing pictures with Pencil is much better compared to editing on Mac with a mouse or the Magic Trackpad. It would be great if I could easily and quickly use my iPad and Pencil to edit something I am seeing on my Mac. For example, right click on my Mac and in the menu is 'use iPad+Pencil to edit' what's on my Mac screen.

A 16" iPad Pro would work.

Circular Apple Watch would suck.

Why does MR attract the most miserable people on the Internet? Where are these supposed Apple fanboys everyone speaks of? Thanks Dan and Hartley, as always!

I know this is sacrilegious, but I cannot wait for the 17 series. Anything to get rid of my 15PM, haha!

I just need one feature on iPadOS and i would be very happy ... having M2 / M4 on the iPad Pro i would really be happy if Apple officially enabled Virtualization ... in my opinion, this would be the perfect trade-off between iPadOS and MacOS ... i often need to do stuff on MacOS while using my iPad Pro (easy to bring allong anywhere) and as of now, i need to use third party software to do Remote Screen Sharing while needing a network connnection to connect on my mac at home (not very practical solution).

Having a macOS virtualized on my iPad Pro would be a very welcomed solution for my needs and this could be enabled without canibalizing anything for Apple different devices.

I really hope they add this to iPadOS 19, a PRO feature for people needing to do technical PRO interventions on client sites.

The RAM is to limited for macos I would say. But anyway the Hypervisor Framework would be a welcomed change to run linux on it or JIT enabled to have fast emulated selfcontained linux apps like iSH.

I am hoping for EU intervention
