Apple today unveiled an update coming to CarPlay, which will support the company's new "Liquid Glass" design to align with updates coming to iOS 26 later this year.

Apple said that the new design includes a new compact view for incoming calls that allows users to see who's calling without blocking key information like upcoming directions.

Apple is also introducing the ability to quickly send Tapbacks and pinned conversations in Messages, as well as support for Widgets and Live Activities. All of these updates are also coming to CarPlay Ultra.

Why do they need to use cars that only people who eat gold and have flying ponies can afford for their demos. I mean it might be understandable for Car PlayUltra considering it's only on Aston Martin for now, but CarPlay 2 is basically what's going to replace the CarPlay version, which is on normal human being's vehicles.

They showed Car Key coming to GMC and Chevrolet. Does this possibly mean GM has finally backtracked on its anti-CarPlay stance as well?

Probably not, no one was ever going to buy a digital car key so that doesn't have money tied to it. Chevrolet has basically figured out that CarPlay and some additional Apple features made OnStar useless.... So they are trying to remove car play to get back to the model where they can charge you more for services after you already bought the car.

I mean, Car Key competes with their myChevrolet/myGMC app that uses OnStar for remote key fob services, which they charge for after a "free trial" that comes with a new vehicle purchase.

I guess it depends on whether the Car Key implementation is NFC-only, such that remote lock/unlock and remote start still require an OnStar subscription.

I'm excited to have widgets in CarPlay but I need to look more closely at how they're implemented. I saw a view that looked more like the view when your iPhone is on the charger sideways and I don't really like that. I hope we can customize what shows up on the right side of the maps because it drives me crazy when it puts things in there that I don't need.

I really wish there was a way to customize the CarPlay Home Screen from iPhone with a visual view of the CarPlay screen on the phone.

And as it is now, some Settings in the CarPlay Settings app are only accessible through the car when connected, and the ordered list is awful. That should be reconciled with the Settings app on iPhone so that you can control settings like whether to override silent mode without having to go out to your car.

Ok, the fact that it took this long to finally have an active phone call not take up the whole screen is astounding; but hey, at least it's finally a thing

Now gone will be the days of me having to tap out of the phone call to see my map and such again while I'm on a call

Because they need automaker's cooperation in implementing Car Play 2 and so far, Aston Martin gave one. Other car companies prefer to keep the infotainment systems closed off, or closely controlled.

Why’s do they use models that look better than most people to advertise watches, sunnies and all other clothing?

Because it looks better man. Welcome to advertising.

As a new owner of a 2020 BMW 330i do we get these updates? Is CarPlay something that's a part of the phone's OS or is something tied to the cars themselves?
