Good deal. Especially if you can get apple care.
Used to think 256 wasn’t enough to have an external home folder because of all my Adobe, Resolve and other apps but after getting a Studio Max M2 with the 512 was able to move nearly everything in home folder using symbolic links to my external ssd and got the internal below 200 with plenty of room to spare. Just permissions are a little wonky on the external but it works and is super fast booting.
Apple intelligence is available to be enabled if wanted too. :p

I don't think most people understand the power they are getting for under $500. And furthermore, what a similarly equipped Windows/PC computer would cost in comparison... it's completely nuts.

I do think they should make 512GB the bottom line on storage, with photographs and videos having reached such great sizes in terms of pixels and bytes, most folks have ginormous photo libraries. It seems like RAM has progressed naturally but disk space stopped evolving ten years ago, if not more. Still, CRAZY good deal.

Part of me thinks ..... " a bargain", but then I think ..... "why the hell would they make such a device with a meagre 256GB SSD ?" ... ahh yes - marketing
It is a bargain. Especially for those who primarily use cloud storage or external. I love my M4 Mini 16/256 and still have over 100GB of internal space. I just store everything I don't use on an external ssd and stuff I am currently working with on SD cards. Internal is just for apps, system, and stuff I need to be accessed without external connections, which isn't much.

You mean AppleCare+, right? I’m debating adding it to the secondhand one of these I got for $385. It’s been running perfectly and is still within the limited warranty until April. I have three days left to add AppleCare+. Have you had experiences where you’ve needed it for a desktop computer?

That’s a great deal. I bought the 256Gb version several months ago and upgraded the SSD to 2 TB from expand Mac mini for $350. Beats the heck out of the $800 Apple wants for 2 TB.

I would rather upgrade base storage or ram. Sure you could get really unlucky but the mini is pretty unlikely to break

(I realize I just jinxed myself.)

Most people will definitely need external storage. 256 is fine if all you do is email, browse web and stream.
You said most people will need more, then described most people's actual usage in the very next sentence.

If you'd said "most people on MacRumors will definitely need external storage," you'd be correct. We're still a tiny minority of users.

I'd prefer to have more RAM.
For storage I'm using NAS. One can also store in cloud or USB attached disk. I heard some users replaced SSD but probably losing warranty.
I did upgrade my SSD. My plan is to pop the old SSD in if I do need warranty service. Admittedly, that could backfire on me.

Never used it for my desktop but like that safety net but have used AppleCare on my iPhone when I got OLED burn-in and they replaced the screen for free.
As you might have seen there was a power issue with the M2 mini, these things will start cropping up and I’m concerned that without AppleCare somebody might be out of luck with a used unit.

Very good deal for the mini. Planning to buy one. However there are no offers in my region and looks like I will be paying the full price.

An incredible deal (go for the 512/24gig) for an amazing device. However, if what you need is more GPU and Thunderbolt, hold out for the M5, which is going to be a BEAST.

If you really need a new PC now, this is the best deal in Apple’s lineup.

I got the Mini for similar price and installed 2TB SSD upgrade from alibaba dealer and got on with life.it cost me $499 + $204 for 2TB upgrade. Plenty of youtube videos on how to do it. Apple doesn’t explicitly forbid you from doing this. You get to keep the 256GB original SSD for warranty purposes.

I'm typing on one right now with a fast external 2Tb drive I was already using for external storage for video and I just moved my iCloud and Music libraries over there. Bargain is an understatement. Solved a problem of needing extra computer - cheap!

Unless you need pro-level compute power for data crunch or video it is wicked fast and plenty of memory for everyday, or even basic dev use and Docker, etc.

that discount vs my MacMini M2 worth like 24/512?! damn!

why you people got the good things :(

I had the base model - returned it as the ram was laughable at 8gb and was swapping into the 256gb drive which was down to 100gb. This was just running teams, zoom or regular office apps and few browsers. No adobe or video editing.
I think you’re talking about an M1 or M2 Mac Mini. The minimum ram on these is 16GB. I’ve also ran zoom, Google productivity suite, and 3 browsers with multiple windows each for hours at a time with no swap at all on my M4 16/256. It’s a solid machine.

Hilarious. The M4 Mac Mini, which this is about, was never available at 8GB. It was launched November of last year with 16GB minimum.
