ViewFinity S9 looks nice but all 4 of my monitors stopped taking video over Thunderbolt.

What do you mean they stopped?

I just upgraded my screen to a Dell 4k thunderbolt 4 monitor (U2724DE), so that I could swap my personal MBP and my work Dell laptop with ease, and it's been working perfectly. I had a usb-c dell monitor prior that I gave to my wife, as she needed an upgrade from her ancient Asus 21".

The ViewFinity S9 monitors don't recognize a video signal and will power off. It does connect because my MacBook Pro will start charging. They have been updated, reset, etc. and no video at all. Also with two different docks and connected directly to the computer as well. DisplayPort works though.

My S9 has been nothing but a pain in the butt. When it works it looks nice. But the same "sleep" issue has been a serious annoyance, and resolving it by unplugging power... well, for a thousand dollars this thing just ought to work right. And Samsung's "support" is in a league of its own - and not in a good way.

The smart feature is really annoying. At least how it is implemented currently. What I learned is to update the monitor to the latest version AND DISABLE (important not remove) the Samsung TV Plus App if the monitor is connected to Wifi.
