Hello.

Ever since upgrading to Tahoe, the main column in Mail always defaults to extremely narrow. (See pic.) Even though I stretch it back out, it resets to this way too narrow width.

Any tip on what I could do to make it stick?

Thanks.

Did you ever find a fix for this? I stupidly "upgraded" from 15 to 26 yesterday and this is driving me nuts!

This happens to me occasionally, and has happened before Tahoe. I don't know what causes it, and it's really annoying, but it's not new. True, when I put it back to where I want it, it stays that way, typically for days or even weeks. Then it does it again.

I installed 26 two days ago and it's happened about five times, including twice today.

I could be wrong -- my memory could be wrong -- that I was seeing this before Tahoe. Maybe that shouldn't be a data point in this discussion. The next time it happens I'll make a note of the date.

I've used Mail as my primary client since 2003 and I'd never seen this issue until I installed 26. I've logged a bug, but I'm not hopeful for a fix.

Apology in advance that this is not really a solution, but an observation and possible way to work with the annoyance instead of against it:

I've noticed this issue in Mail (and other apps) for years and multiple OS updates. At some point I got tired of resizing columns and switched to the top/bottom view instead of left/right view in Mail. The problem still exists there as well. Either the "From" column or the "Subject" column resizes.

The only thing that makes it workable for me is that I have Mail and Calendar each filling half the screen in a Space on one of my displays (note that it's not a Split Screen View, just each app's window filling half the screen). They both automatically open on that screen in the same Space and for whatever reason, the columns stay put that way.

I also tend to not close those apps at any time unless I need to restart, such as after an OS update, etc.

I've had this problem in several apps.

What worked for me, for the most part, has been to open each affected app with the Shift key held down (to reset the saved state of the app's windows), next set the window size and sidebar widths as you prefer, then quit the app.

Didn't help for me. Holding Shift doesn't seem to do anything (whether I have a wide or narrow column upon quitting, restarting Mail with Shift results in the same width) and it didn't fix the problem either.
