250GB external HD or 1GB of RAM?

So I've got a few dollars to spend of the old MBP and I can't decide which to get: a external HD (thinking of TimeMacine) or more RAM.

What would you do?

Depends how important backing up your data is to you. If your MBP seems slow get the ram, but I'd probably get the HD now and ram later. If you lost some files you'd wish you had a backup.

Depends. On the MacBook Pro 512 mb RAM is more acceptable, but I'd still want to up that to at least 768.

If you already have 768 or 1 gb, then I'd go with the external HDD...

Yeah, I've got the original 2.0 with 1GB so I'm leaning towards the HD, although I haven't really messed with Vista too much so the extra RAM might be more useful.

What good will an extra GB of RAM do you when your Western Digital internal drive fails and you lose all your data? Get the HD and back up with SuperDuper.

I'd get more RAM first. Have an old computer? Use that for backups.

It's not like the hard drive will magically crash less than 5 minutes after you get RAM, unless you are extremely unlucky.

If you really are cramped for space on your MBP HD and are fine with the current performance of 1 GB, I would get the external HD like everyone else suggests.
