Will 256 GB SSD be the standard configuration in the next generation?

What do you think, and why do you think so?

I mean... maybe? Local data requirements have gone down in my experience - largely due to the prominence of fast internet, cheap cloud storage, and music/video streaming services. I used to always use 500gb hard drives back in 06/07 to give me some headroom but I don't think I've pushed pass 250gb in the last 5 or 6 years. External storage is also very fast and much cheaper than ordering more on-board from Apple and I think they know this.

If the Air is meant to be the 'budget' option, I doubt they'll bump the storage tiers. I think they'd be more likely to slash a hundred or two off of the price.

I don't think so. I think with cloud storage where it is, 128 is less of a problem now than it was 5 years ago. I bought the 256, but I get why a lot of people would probably only want the 128 GB for $1099.

I have owned both 128GB and 256GB drives and neither Mac encountered any "low storage" problems. Cloud computing being what it is, you can literally buy gigabytes of storage for pennies on the dollar.

Short answer: no.

Forget cloud computing. What happens if you can't get to the cloud? I prefer external storage. Cheaper and more secure from prying eyes. And, it's always there for you, even when you don't have internet access.

As for the original poster, with all the low cost storage solutions out there, I don't think 256gb will ever be the norm. No need.

And why are the storage tiers are getting bigger every year for the iPhones and iPads? This cloud argument should be even more valid for these devices...

By all rights it should be. I don't see that apple have to use bleeding-edge fast SSDs in a general use product like the Air (MLC is appreciated for the extra durability) but most windows competitors offer 256GB for considerably less, and where they do offer 128GB SSDs they are paired with a 1TB HDD for volume storage. I don't doubt there will be some people who have very basic storage needs but 256 is a comfortable minimum for a computer at this price IMO.

Apple is utilizing extremely fast ssd chips and charging more than gold per ounce.

Ironic then, that it’s driving the market to slower (and sometimes inaccessible) online and external storage workarounds.

In some situations my 10 year old Macbook core2duo with large, cheap ssd, is going to get some tasks completed quicker. Everything is already on-board. I like cloud for backup. As a primary means of interacting with my data? Nope.
