Updated to Yosemite a few weeks back and noticed one day while changing my screen resolution that the option for 2560x1440 (my native resolution) vanished after I dropped down to a lower resolution. As I cursing the name of Apple, I was clicking on any option in the display settings to see if I could get it back. It would only allow me the highest resolution of 1080p. After about 10 minutes, while changing the rotation 90 degrees, the option suddenly popped back on screen. I selected it and the screen went back to its native resolution, I then rotated back to its default rotation where it dropped back down to 1080p, but left the option on screen for 1440p. I selected it, and things got back to normal. Yesterday, I dropped the resolution and the option for 1440p was once again gone, I attempted the same method as before to attempt a restore, but to no avail. I have since tried many methods of restoring the defaults by any means I could research:
I unplugged every cable, in every variation possible,
I reset the vram/pram/smc,
I attempted to alter setting via terminal -- however my password could not be accepted for some reason.
Holding 'option' does not reveal 1440p either.
Clearing the PRAM did make the resolution option appear, but when selected, I get the spinning umbrella of death, and suddenly the option is gone and the 1080p resolution it began with remains.
Previously when I was altering the resolution back to 1440p, I was getting the spinning umbrella as well, however, it would at least let me select it.

If anyone knows what I can do or has had the same experience resolved, please. I beg of you. :(
