27 Firmware update iMac, icons missing

I did the 27 inch firmware update that apple issued and when I use the finder now I have issues. The icons that were on the desktop no longer appear on the desktop, but they do in the finder. The right click only finder when on the desktop doesn't work. And when I open say the show view options window sometimes the icons or menu items are missing?
