If the TV is on or something I can't hear it, but if the room's fairly quiet then I can hear a "chirp chirp chirp chirp" sound which repeats every several seconds. Facing the screen on my iMac, the sound is clearly coming from the top right.

There are no Apple Stores where I live, and my 1 year futureshop warrantee just expired. Is it a dangerous chirp?

I had (now belongs to my parents) a mini with a chirpy fan. I had it checked out and it was given a clean bill of health. Since the sound is so soft, I just let it be. Three years on, it's still running perfectly. It's just like you described though: it can only be heard in a silent room.

Different things can cause a chirping sound: fans, hard drives, etc.. The only way to know for sure is to have someone look at it.
