I've just installed an 840 Pro and I know replacing the HD would cause the fans to race so I installed it on the second port leaving the HD installed which I thought wouldn't be a problem.

However the fans are running flat out, any ideas?

Any help would really be appreciated.

Shouldn't leaving the original drive in stop any fan issues?

Firstly, what iMac do you have.

By second port do you mean: third unused slot on 2010-2011 iMacs, the one where the optical drive was or the second port on the thin iMacs?

resetting the smc didn't work?

-Shut down the computer.
-Unplug the computer's power cord.
-Wait fifteen seconds.
-Attach the computer's power cord.
-Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.

Thanks for the responses, in my frustration of trying to get the board back in I forgot to plug the HD fan in

Took it apart again this morning and its running great now.

Now that its all working smoothly I'm really pleased with the results
