Or hell, it doesnt have to be 27'', I am just trying to see what's out there that would be better than standard 21.5'' screen resolution.

27'' monitor with same resolution as 27'' iMac?

Jesus. 350$ extra and it comes with a built in mac straight from Apple.
Anyway, I'd have to be stupid to spend that much money on a monitor given what I'd use it for.
It's just frustrating that almost everything 21'' and above has exactly the same resolution.

Talk about wasted physical space. 
I have a Dell 30" that I've been using for a couple of years and it's been great. Both a 27" and 30" are 2560 wide but the 30" is 2560x1600 with a 1.6 (16x10) aspect ratio to the 27" 2560x1440 1.78 (16x9) ratio. So both are the same width but you get a couple of extra inches of hight with the 30". Food for thought.
Yeah. If you want a screen thats exactly the same as the 27" imac, the only screen you can get is the U2711. I made the plunge and I'm relativity happy. They pretty nice together but it would be nice if Apple came out with a 27" cinema display.
The dell uses exactly the same UPS Panel as the iMac so colour is almost exactly the same once calibrated (I had to use the imac calibration to colour looking the same). The only thing is the U2711 doesn't use LED backlighting like the iMac, so its not as bright.
But in terms of not wanting to use a second screen thats not the same same size/resolution, I totally understand and I haven't regretted getting my Dell.
The other option to the dell is you could get a second 27" imac (lowest spec of course) and use it as a second screen. Other than being EXACTLY the same, it means you've got a second computer as a redundancy.
