I have a 13 inch Macbookpro retina. I tried to hook it up to the new Apple 27 inch Thunderbolt display but the power cord that is supposed to power the laptop does not fit. What am I doing wrong?

You need an adaptor. The rMBPs use Magsafe 2 which was new to that range of computers as well as the 2012 MacBook Air.

Prior to that all MacBooks, MacBook Airs and Macbook Pros used a Magsafe connector (as on the Thunderbolt display)

EDIT: if your display is new then there should've been an adaptor in the box.
