Hi. I'm a college student and considering purchasing a new macbook pro in the near future. It has come to my attention that the apple student developer program offers better discounts than the regular student discounts. Is this the case and what is the discount? Can i join this program for the discount..even if i don't have any background in software development? I guess I'm asking..how exactly does the program work? Thanks.

Ok. So in MY case I am actually attending school for computer science and computer security and was able to join the ADC. I believe any college student can from what I have read from others on here.
You pay $99 for the package. You get a free t-shirt and a copy of the OS and a monthly mailing. Eventually, if things don't change leopard will come our way. Then you get a "once in a lifetime" discount. This discount is pretty significant. In the US it is about $101 difference from EDU prices once you factor in the intial $99 you pay to join. Also if you choose upgrades its also cheaper saving you more.
This is in reference to the MBP pricing.
word of advice since you are in college. DO NOT BUY THE WARRENTY FROM the ADC store.
You can buy items from any store you qualify for. So buy the MBP in the ADC store along with upgrades saving you at the very least $101, but more if you upgrade then you save another $100 for the warrenty at the EDU store....I know I am a loser and figured this all out.

I just signed up for the Student ADC. You save $200 off the first MBP model with your student discount. You save $400 off the first MBP model if you have the Developers Discount. So doing the math, if you sign up, you will still get the computer for $100 cheaper than if you were to not sign up for the Student ADC. That's why I did it. An extra $100 off is always good.
I did the same thing when I got my powerbook and got a similar discount as everyone else who has replied. While I do have some background in programming and I use my mac for web development, I was never asked to prove this. Unlike the normal student discount you will have to prove you are a student by sending in an id and schedule or something like that.
