Currently I have a 27in 2011 iMac so its nearing 2 years since I got it
had the 256GB SSD + 1TB.
The 1TB is maxed out and hardly put much data aside from documents and downloads on the SSD.

I just got a great deal on a 3TB 7200RPM drive and am going to replace the 1TB and leave the SSD and Fuse the SSD+3TB together (easier to manage data, etc).
Now I have only used the optical drive 3-5 times max since getting this to rip a few cds.
Any recommendations on what I should put in place of it? SSD or standard storage drive?

I do final cut, logic, photoshop, illustrator as my power apps.
SO i was either thinking
Secondary/scratch for final cut/adobe stuff
Back-up boot internal boot drive/restore drive, etc -- since with fusion i believe you have to use internet recovery to reinstall the OS? and might make it easier to have an internal bootable drive instead of slow and sluggish external.

has anyone else done something similar?

interesting idea.
i'd recommend a ssd to replace the optical drive honestly.
you have enough storage on the fusion drive 256+3TB it appears.
Will 4TB disk work?

will be a great and fast scratch disk for apps and a quick restore partition as well.
