I have just received my new Ipod and synced with the music library with no problems, despite having a new Vista PC which I have just Authorized and transferred my old Library across to.

Because this is my first iPod with colour screen and video, I also started trying to sync my photos from "My pictures". I followed all the instructions and pointed the phot tab at My Pictures. The moment the iPod begins to sync the folder, Itunes starts running very slowly and not responding to input. It eventually gets to "Optimizing photos for Ipod" popup with a status of "1 of 212". The PC starts to suffer now generally not responding to input, shut down, Task Manager requests. after about 10 minutes it goes to "2 of 212" and if I leave it for about 1/2 hour, it may reach 4 0r 5, at which point the PC generally crashes. Crashes have been blue screen of death and/or total restart without notice. This is a brand new Intel Pentium Core Duo with a Vista performance score of 5.6 and more disk space than you can shake a stick at.

I tried resets, restores & updates multiple times. Tried with a folder with one picture in, which it does manage to transfer after 5/6 minutes - but with corruption of the image.

Any help much appreciated, this is driving me crazy.

BTW - I use Picassa 2 but tried shutting it down - same issue. Same with Windows Media Center - although I half suspect I may not have managed to shut down all of Media Center - God knows what Microsoft have it doing....

Even on my Mac I notice that syncing photos for the first time is an exorbitantly CPU intensive task. I'd restart the the computer and try syncing again. It will take a long time, but will probably work eventually. If it doesn't, I don't know what you can do short of waiting for an update.

Thanks Fleetwood - I'll keep trying, but so far I haven't got beyond 5/6 of 212 images processed before the PC crashes. Do you know the best place to submit this as an issue to feed it back to Apple?

Are these large images?
If so, processing them to an iPod capable size is difficult for a computer to do quickly.
Try transferring "full size" images, surely you have enough space on an 80GB iPod? :)

Thanks Nitynate - I'll try full sized images - my current music library is about 20Gb and ideally I want to leave space for a few movies but you're right - I've got a bit of space to play with. :)

Just an update - transferring full size images makes no difference. ITunes still says optimizing.... and still crashes the PC.

After enabling manual updates, I have transferred all the pictures to the ipod by manually dragging the folders to the IPod in windows explorer - but then I can't browse the folders on the IPod.

Any ideas?

Problem resolved

by upgrading Intel Matrix Storage Manager to 7.6.

Who knew this was caused by using RAID? Nobody. Anyway it is definitely fixed now - Ipod syncs no problem at all.

It also seemed to resolve other problems I was having with my PC crashing and having to be rebuilt.

Phew. I was badmouthing Vista to everyone - and I'm still not happy - but it is nowhere near as flakey as it was now that this is resolved.
