My hold button is extremely touchy. There will be days when I barely touch it and it works. Then there will be days where I'll push it down 10 times, and nothing will happen. Usually the button gets stuck as well, so it constantly asks me if I want to shut down.
I haven't spilled anything on the iPod, and it's been doing this for quite a while with no improvements.

Is there anything I can do to fix the button besides getting it replaced?

Sounds like a damaged button and a miscommunication between the button's gold connectors and the logic board. If it's affecting your device's functionality, then the best fix is either a repair/replacement with Apple, or getting a new one.
