2G iPhone - Sound Only From Speaker Not Headphones

I have a unique problem with my 2G iPhone on s/w 1.1.4

Sound is only coming from the built-in speaker on the iPhone, even with headphone plugged in. I have tried suggestions in other threads, where other users are having problems opposite to mine, ie sound only from headphone, not speaker. Things I have tried are cleaning the headphone jack, plugging in and out the headphone, resetting the iphone via Settings/General/Reset/Reset All Setting, virginize, all do not work.

My iPhone is now a phone, with no ipod functions since I can't listen to music thru the headphones.

Anyone has any suggestions? Thanks!!

These headphone are the Apple ones that ship with the phone correct?

I fond with my 2G iPhone that sometimes the headphones would lose their connection causing the sound to run through the speakers.

This may not help but have you tried updating to 2.0 to see if this is in fact a software issue?
