I have a 2G iPod that came with a Firewire cable. I'm trying to use a USB cable (that came with my Nano) to power the iPod, but it's not working. I can use the Firewire cable with no problem, and can power then Nano using the USB cable.

Am I missing something here? The iPod + USB basically doesn't charge but does connect to the computer, so it's like the iPod doesn't pull power from the USB. Any ideas?

2G iPod's have a firewire port if you mean a 3G iPod with the dock connector and 4 buttons below the screen then it doesn't charge via USB, only firewire.

I'm assuming it's USB2 (I have a PowerBook). I use the same USB cable and port to power my Nano ... so I know it's a powered port.

Try resetting the iPod, by pressng the Menu button and the Center button for 10 seconds straight. Sometimes that helps as it resets the power management unit.
