2g lost all power after going to sleep mode

The 2g that works fine when connected to AC power or USB cables, it even works fine when disconnected. But, when the phone is disconnected and go into sleep mode or hibernation, it loose all power. The iphone is dead. Reconnecting to AC power gets the phone functioning. If the phone is set to never sleep, it also works fine. The phone did have water damage at one point. Could the problem be a bad or damage data ribbon cable?
