2G to 3G - worth the upgrade?

Currently using my 1st gen iPhone with a Vodafone SIM here in the UK, great piece of kit and sersiously happy with it.

Quite tempted at the moment, seeing as my contract is up, to swtich to o2 and get a 3G iPhone 16Gb .. I'm thinking white.

Anyone else (UK ideally to give me an idea of how good it works on o2 network) do the same? Any regrets? How does it compare to 1st gen? Also is white a good choice? Would like to use it with an invisible shield screen film an no other case so thinking white over black to hide any marks/fingerprints etc...
