2g with latest firmware . Cannot turn speaker phone on?

new to the whole iphone thing. Can see i have a button to turn on a speaker during calls etc. But when i press it it does not work??? i reccon the phone is fine and its a "user " (me !!) problem ??

so far i am amazed at the build quality.

Just as a first step, try turning up the volume after switching to speaker. Just a thought.
