Up until recently I have shot at 2k with my go pro. I have recently started to experiment with 4k. The reason is that at some point I want to develop my skills to create shorts to enter in competition. This is my question: after doing side by side comparisons-on my macbook pro and youtube and vimeo channels I really dont see a great difference. I assume that i need 4k for projection on a movie screen?

The detail is more noticeable on larger 4k screens. The advantage with shooting 4k is you have more pixels to works with for special effects, like zooming.

That's right - when viewed on the same screen, they would look similar/same. I don't think your MBP has a 4K display, but you may have an external monitor? In any event, many shoot 4K for the post production capabilities - zoom/crop, pan - without loss of clarity for HD delivery. As 6K and 8K cameras are emerging, they will only be used for 4K delivery, if that.
