Is the speaker on the 2nd gen powerful enough to make it useable as an alarm clock ? (I was very disappointed that using the first gen that way wasn't practical - too quiet and sleeping with earphones is not practical - nor is travel speakers because one might as well carry an alarm clock in that case).

So I'm just on the edge of buying a second gen and this could be the feature that clinches it for me.

That feature works fine for me (depending on the tone). You can't select a song for the alarm, just a series of what I believe are standard ringtones for the iPhone.

That being said, I was able to wake up with the previous iPod touch alarm, loud enough to wake me up near my "normal" wake up time though.
