I just grabbed a bargain by buying a first gen macbook pro for 220 gbp. However, the superdrive is "broken" - i am hoping the issue is as described here or here. If not I will just replace the drive. Furthermore, the battery is broken (infamous x). I was planning on just replacing the battery by buying one off ebay, but considering that apple has acknowledged the battery issue in macbooks and that the warranty has been extended for batteries, I was wondering if I should go to the apple store and ask for a replacement battery, or if this is not possible with second hand computers.

Can't hurt to phone them up and ask, my CD MBP was second hand and I've had battery replaced twice by recall and battery replacement programme. Though it may be too old now, but doesn't hurt to phone.
