2nd Iphone 4 - Sim not working?

Hi
I have one Iphone 4, sim activated works fine, use all the time. Just bought girlfriend one and I'm attempting to check it works. I plug my sim in and it says "waiting for activation" then goes to "no service" -> I can't even access WiFi? it just doesn't see the WiFi or any signal but my iphone can see the wifi and browse it etc?

Phone is locked to orange, sim card is orange.
Imei checks showing it is not blacklisted.

Do I have to disassociate my sim card with my old iphone first or something?

Sounds like a faulty i4. I'd bring it back.

as an update, I got it working last night on WiFi just with a restart but it still wont use the sim.

So I tried the sim in a colleagues Iphone 4 this morning and it wanted activation too?

(his Iphone is unlocked and his sim is a different carrier to mine so unfortunately unable to test his sim)


Is there some basic activation I need to do that I'm missing because I can't find anything on the net apart from restart and wait- I've restarted and i've waited for 12 hours?
