I’d like to find a monitor that closely matches the look of my 27 inch 5k iMac both cosmetically and performance-wise. Any suggestions...and does it need to be thunderbolt?

Short answer: there is no best option. Closest in terms of resolution is the LG 5K. Closest in design is the old Apple Cinema Display (2560x1440).

I’ve been toying with this topic and have not found a best solution. I’ve resigned to a 4K 24” Dell on the left side and 27” Dell (2560x1440) on the right. Waiting for deals on the Pro Display XDR and will use the iMac as a side monitor when that happens.

I’ve even tried this:

does it need to be thunderbolt?

No. All you need is a USB C to DisplayPort/HDMI adapter. Or an external graphics card (what I use).

Here’s me running four additional screens.

Thanks for the advice ruslan120. Yeah, I've thought about just getting two smaller (probably 24 inch) on both sides of the iMac but that's really overkill. It would be nice if someone would just make a decent monitor that looks enough cosmetically like iMac. I'm not sure if I need the resolution to be as good. I just need a bit more real-estate for secondary windows. I've been using my 12.9 iPad pro as a sidecar but it's just not cutting it. Bottom line, I'm finding it's hard to go from a two monitor setup to one even if it's 27 inch and 5K.
