I have an OWC Thunderbolt dock. I have a 27" Dell monitor and all is well. Would like to add a 2nd (smaller) monitor. what kind of input does the 2nd monitor need? I'm pretty sure I can't daisy chain fro the current Dell unless the 2nd monitor has USB input. Can I use DisplayPort if going though the dock?

You can use DisplayPort or HDMI along with the appropriate cable/adapter. MacOS only supports daisy chaining Thunderbolt displays (cannot daisy chain through DisplayPort, compared to most PCs).

Before you do this though, what M1 chip do you have? If you have the base M1 chip, you won't be able to add another display with that dock. M1 only supports one external display. You would need to find a dock that uses DisplayLink or SiliconMotion to drive the other display. (They have some caveats/downsides since they are software-driven displays, so be sure to do some research about those.) If you have the M1 Pro or M1 Max, then you are good. M1 Pro supports two external displays, and M1 Max supports four external displays.
