I just took my 2008 aluminum Macbook to the GeniusBar.

Everything is fine at full brightness, but a high-pitched buzzing noise is emitted from the top left area of the keyboard whenever the brightness is lowered. The noise gets gradually louder as the brightness is lowered, and vanishes when the brightness is at 0%.

As well, prominent "stage lights" are visible along the lower right half of the display when the brightness is lowered. They do not appear on the left side of the screen.

I have done a lot of searching on this problem, but am still a little confused as this is my 1st Mac and I have only been using it a few weeks (The warranty has expired though).

The Genius said that the inverter was broken and that I need to replace the entire display which would cost $650 + tax, which I declined.

In researching this issue, I came across a few people with this problem who reported that replacing their displays did not fix the issue.

I also seem to recall a post which said that those displays do not use inverters anymore? And could I not just replace the inverter instead of the entire display if that was the problem?

Actually, I found many threads of people complaining of problems similar to this, but I couldn't find any definitive solution.

I have only used the Macbook for a few weeks and was really loving it, but this incident has really put a damper on things.... :(

Any advice would be sincerely appreciated.
