I while back I wanted to know if I could upgrade the LaCie D2 Quadra with an OEM disk. The Quadra is a 500GB version bought in June 2007.

Because of setting up a Guardian Maximus I ordered 2 Hitachis of 2 TB. I decided to see if my plan would work.

The exact HD I put in is a 2TB Hitachi Deskstar 7.200 32 MB cache.

It was very easy to remove and replace the original disk. It works more quiet than the original Samsung drive. Of course I lost my warranty, but with a 2.5 year old drive that was not an issue.

Reading speed over Firewire 800 as reported in Activity Monitor is 83 MB p/s sustained. Writing speed 66 MB p/s

Btw apart from receiving the unit back then with a faulty power brick, I never had any problems with the LaCie.

So I ordered another Hitachi for the GM :)

Nice to know at least this model of LaCie can be upgraded.
