Probably to cover it till a day or two after WWDC.
I'd imagine they might let developers renew fter the OS 3.0 event, but there were rumours they were still sorting out how to renew the licences anyhow.

All that email is saying is that they are extending the 1 year initial subscription for people who signed up during the beta phase so that they have 1 year of subscription against a functioning app store.

Normally you have to renew annually - all this means is that this year the renewal date has been extended to 1 year from the opening of the App store rather than 1 year from when it was started.

Exactly, nothing else can be deduced from this information. While the iPhone OS 3.0 and new version of the iPhone will probably be released sometime in the June/July time frame, there's absolutely no way that they have a set date (other than an estimated goal) for the release of either the new software or hardware at this point. No software or hardware project ever has been run so efficiently that they can accurately peg an exact release date that is at least 3 months away.

I can only imagine it coming out on a Tuesday, didn't the iPhone 3G and iPhone and all the Apple events happen on Tuesdays?
