3.0 upgrade in foreign country?

I'm a US AT&T iPhone customer, but I'm currently traveling outside the US, roaming on foreign carriers' networks. Does the 3.0 OS upgrade require access to the "home" wireless carrier's network for proper activation, or does everything happen online? I'd like to upgrade to 3.0 while I'm traveling, but I don't want to brick the phone.

FWIW my phone is neither unlocked nor jailbroken, just a stock iPhone 3G running 2.2.1.

For the record, I upgraded my phone to 3.0 while in Japan and it worked fine.
