The short answer is "probably not". My gaming PC has the following specs:

3Ghz quad-core Phenom II CPU
4GB of RAM
Nvidia 9800GTX+ with 512 mb of video RAM

I can hit the frame rate cap of 60 fps in L4D2, but there are still significant areas where the frame rate will drop well into the 30's.

So, an iMac with a dual-core CPU and semi-on par graphics with the 9800GTX will see a decent amount of low frame rate.

Will it be playable? Yes, but I don't think you'll get the performance you want.

dunno if I would base my whole computer purchase on just playing a single game?

Is that all you do with your new iMac?

will you still be playing that game six months from now?

No

am not a gamer

but i like this game

just for video editing and waching HD movies

and multitasking with no lagg

27" iMac should run L4D 2 smoothly, seeing that recommended specs are 2.4GHz C2D, 2GB RAM and 128MB DirectX 9 GPU. My friend has 3.3GHz C2D, 4GB RAM and ATI 4870 and he runs it at high settings without lag. 27" iMac's resolution might cause worse performance if you play it at native res but it should still be quite smooth.
