3 & 4 finger swipes stopped working

15" Unibody MBP, summer 20009, latest software updated. Just stopped yesterday being able to do the 3 and 4 finger swipes. Checked system preferences, unchecked and rechecked. Any ideas?

Had to turn it all the way off.
