There are actually two separate problems here where none existed before. I am having a face palm moment.

I want to first point out that this setup worked on my old MacBook Pro.

I have a stereo system connected to a 3.5 mm Jack and a separate Rode Lavalier microphone also to 3.5 mm Jack. Both of these components were connected to a sennheiser Headphone and Mic splitter. I also have a Rode TRRS to TRS SC3 converter between the splitter in the mic for proper TRRS configurations. It worked well.

When I moved this exact configuration to my 2019 iMac/BigSur, no dice. I also happen to have a Rode TRS to TRRS SC3 for converter. I’ve tried every configurations I can think of. I cannot get these items to work together. I tried connecting it to my old Mac, still works fine there.

If I plug the microphone directly into the Mac, It works! But I noticed that in the “input” and “output” tab in the sound section of “Preferences” only shows one sound option at a time. It does not show unused Devices.

It would be nice is someone knew how to force all devices to be shown in preferences. On my old Mac, I was able to select the output device. What’s the point in asking me to select a sound input or output, if all devices except for the current one used are not listed?

I can live without using the stereo system anymore if I must, but the Mic is mission critical and the quality of sound is important. I’m cautious about using a USB adaptor, and would only like to do that as a last option.

If anyone configure out what a person is to do, or what has changed please let me know.

A second face palm.

p.s. I also happen to notice that sennheiser sells a different splitter with apparently different impudence. If I know what would work I buy it.
