I bought/ordered my MBP M1 8/512 from Costco back in November. It came with 90 days return and 2 years warranty so easy choice given this was a first generation. But I didn't need my 90 day return period since any fear buying a 1st generation didn't materialize.
If I could I would have ordered it with 16gig RAM but I honestly have not missed that extra RAM so far.

After 3 months I have to say I am impressed. I had the MacBook 2017 8/256 and I love that machine, it replaced my iPad since it was easy to use in bed and perfect for travel. Was planning to use it when traveling in the future due to size and so light.

However having used my M1 now for a few months (and taken turns with my MacBook) I have to say I couldn't not bring that back and go back to my MacBook. The battery seems to last forever, unless under heavy load but even then it still gives me great battery time. I can easily get 18 hours if I use for light surfing and mail etc. It comes on instantaneously after having been in sleep mode with no spinning beachball.
The Touch Bar, yeah yeah, I know some people don't like it but I really like it. Keyboard is great although I honestly didn't mind the previous version. You just have to learn to fix a stuck key which I did a few times. The two USB-C ports are enough for me, no need for 4, although a built in SD card reader would have been great. But I have one dongle that gives me HDMI, SD reader and USB A port. So I am set.
I look forward to go on the road in the future with my new MBP once Covid is behind us.

Speed is fantastic. I run a vine version of Civ 4 which works great. I can easily see myself playing Baldurs Gate 3 on it. I use it for GarageBand and it feels like whatever I throw at it I get great performance, plus the ability to runner a lot of iPad/iPhone programs for HomeKit accessories etc.
I am more than happy and easily see this as the best Powerbook Apple has produced so far. I probably could have gone for the MBA as well but like I stated earlier I like the touch bar and the fact I have a fan, in case I run something demanding it should give me more power. Also from what I have seen in the forums the screen is also an upgrade and seems more consistent. I did, for the record, have the first MBA that Apple released and it was great but it barely handled anything demanding and screen was a lottery with regards to which panel you got. I won first price and got the best, the Samsung panel with great colors etc.

Only thing that is worse is now when I use my Lenovo for work it makes it even more obvious how bad that laptop is. 🤣
Just wanted to get this off my chest! 😃

Btw, I have 22 cycles after 3 months where I mostly have been running it on battery and recharged it to 80-90%, occasionally 100%. But using it normally is not that bad which is evident from having 22 cycles after 3 months.

I think the M1 MBA is a great bargain for the price. It has been a great laptop for me thus far. If I don't end up with a 14" MBP later on this year, I look forward to version 2 of the MBA.

I have the same exact machine and same number of cycles and the same purchase time as you. :)
Awesome machine, love it. Couldn't be happier.

Also happy with my M1 Air that I use since 2 months... I actually planned to upgrade to M1X/M2 whatever 14/16" Pro later, but to be honest right now there is nothing that this one could not do... If I have it hooked up to the external screen having 13" is not that big deal (but later want to get the bigger Pro since I usually worked a lot on the go)
I have ran into throttling in special cases (once I reached 90 degrees CPU temperature with a VR-collab plugin in browser, Safari was killing the page constantly but Firefox kept it alive and it heated up the CPU nicely :) ), but usually it's not a problem (and I hate touchbar so no regrets going for the Air)

It's crazy that a typical home-user can buy a new M1 Air for ~1000$ that is more powerful than machines that were 2.5-3k a few years ago... Macbook used to be a premium expensive device, with cheaper Air offerings being always a big compromise, but now you can get a future-proof device for this price...
