Last Friday I transferred 1912.86 Euro to an Apple reseller’s bank account. After having used (home) computers from the humble Sinclair ZX-80, Commodore VIC-20 and Apple ][+, I switched to PC’s in 1989 and have been using one since then. However, contrary to popular belief, even die-hard and professional WinTel users know there is more between heaven and earth. As I’m used to buying a new PC every 3 years, I decided to do some ‘soul searching’. And I made a list of the things I really do on my PC. The avid gaming has somewhat subsided and what remained was mainly writing, listening to music, e-mailing, web browsing, photo editing and maintaining a couple of modest websites. It was BootCamp that convinced me to buy an iMac. Because of my work I have a dedicated VPN connection to my company network and some special software to work with. Not a problem with BootCamp.

So, hopefully in less than 3 weeks, I will receive the following: a 20”, 2.4 GHz. iMac with 4 GB RAM, 500 GB harddrive, wireless keyboard and Mighty Mouse, iWork ’08 plus the new AirPort Extreme. On my whish list are an external 500 GB USB drive to cater for my future use of TimeMachine, (I already have a 160 GB one just to cater for my MP3s), an AirPort Express for the use of AirTunes and a short-list of must have software.

This post is by no means to gain me some brownie points within a well-established Mac community because I believe one’s value to any community does not come so easy. To me an iMac is a logical choice. Stunning industrial design, very clean and basic, conceptual and end user centric OS approach and last but not least, an appeal to the wannabe ‘be sure, be cool, stay high, bye-bye’ attitude of this almost 48 year old geezer.

I will keep you posted, if you want to or not, of my venture into the magical world of Mac.
