I'm looking for a solid 30-inch monitor to connect to a late 2012 iMac. Primary need is for photo editing, though I will also use it for basic stuff, such as ms office, movies, music.

Price range under $1500.

I've looked at the Dell U3011 reviews, which seem promising. Just wondering what the general trade-offs will be when comparing these monitors features against the Apple Thunderbolt Display.

Guessing will need to buy a web cam, no speaker/sound included, any other Mac program functionality issues?

Is the Mac monitor that much worse for photo work?

From my experience, no screen beats apples screens in terms of quality. I know 27" is slightly smaller than what you're looking for but if i were you, i'd get an apple thunderbolt screen or just buy the 27" iMac?

If it is a 30" screen you need, then you're pretty much tied to Dell, HP, and Samsung. I'm not even sure if HP still make a 30" model.
