Wife hooks up iphone, says the imac needs the new itunes. Downloads it. Installs fine. Sync's the iphone. Gets an 'unknown error... (-32)'. She tries to sync again. Same error. She tries several more times, same error. Calls me over.

Meanwhile, iphone 'bricks'. Won't come up. I soft reset it and all is well, we think. It now synch's fine. Of course now, her contacts are gone on the iphone. They are also gone on the imac. All calendar items are gone too. Iphone finishes resyncing, nothing changed. Try to do a restore from backup, get (-32) errors on all of the backups listed. This is the original computer that knows this iphone. There were hudreds of contacts, all gone. A lot of calendar items, all gone.

I look in the library directory under mobilesync and there are a number of directories but they are all from yesterday. Apparently all of the backups from earlier than yesterday are deleted.

So: What is a -32 error? Where else could backups be stored? If the addressbook is somewhere in these files in mobilesync, how can I get them back? Has anyone experienced this before? Is this a bug in itunes 8.1.1(10)? If, as postulated by Apple, this is a USB issue; then why did it nuke so much on the imac?

Thanks for any assistance/ideas!
