But whats so good about them compared to Vista laptops? (not sounding rude, cos i really, really want one, but im still wondereing whether to buy a cheaper vista laptop)

I think one of the hugest benefits of buying a Macbook would be that you no longer had to worry about it working. It just would work, and get out of the way and let you get on with what you wanted to do.
Theres hundreds of great reasons to get a Macbook, including iLife and the upcoming Leopard, but at the end of the day, it depends on if your willing to buy into it.
It will be a bit more costly than buying a cheaper PC laptop, but I can guarantee you that It'll be more than worth it

get a macbook because I said so, it really isnt cheaper to go with a vista machine.
If you compare processors alone you will notice that many PC laptops simply say intel core duo. little do they say that its really only a 32bit CD with around 1.6 ghz. comparing to a baseline MB with 2.0ghz of C2D.
Also vista sucks up ram like there is no tomorrow. A MB with 1gb of ram will blow a vista machine with 1.5GB of ram out of the water.
Not to mention the priceless non worrying non headache ease of OS X.

While I have not used Vista, I have used every other Windows OS extensively, and the biggest advantage I see in OS X is that it just gets out of the way and lets you get on with your work. No baby sitting the OS, patching it, monitoring it, no virus headaches.
It's kinda hard to explain until you try it for a few days and then you start to appreciate the subtle advantages. It's always the little things that make the largest difference.
Well... so far I have saved up £40... lol... only £650 to go... but i intend to get a summer job next year, plus put some of my own money im saving now towards it and maybe use some money from parents... because they said they would put some money towards a laptop for me college life... but i don't know if they will be willing to fund part of a Macbook... becasue they're Windows all the way... but i will get one.. if i have to work until i pass out! I want one...
I was trying one the other day in the Apple Shop in WestQuay Southampton and i was amazed. MattJessop is right... eveything just works. Its fasts, compatible, easy to use, even though i got confused with some things. However, i didnt like the fact that the mouse pad didnt work as a click pad too.. like on most other Laptops... but i dunno if that was a setting..?

Vista is NAF!
Vista has many bugs. The most infuriating I experienced was the fact that it takes so damn long to copy/move/delete files. To copy 900MB of data to another partition took 10 minutes!!! A user on another forum mentioned it took 25 mins to delete 3.2GB of data!!! Apparently this is due to DRM??? Micro$haft are ignoring users who are having this problem. I was told it was my laptop that was at fault! What they couldn't explain was how I was able to delete the same data from within a virtual machine running XP in under a 20 seconds!!! MICRO$HAFT STINKS in this respect.

1) battery Life - Macbooks are easily at the top of the pile for battery life and don't need any large capacity batteries sticking out the back of the machine
2) iSight - if you're going to uni having the webcam built in to the laptop is incredibly handy, especially now that wi-fi hotspots are becoming more common.
3) OSX 10.5 - by the time you come to buy your machine 10.5 will be out and that brings a lot of revisions that are going to be useful for you. MOst obvious I guess would be time machine as, from bitter experience, having automatic backups of documents will be a bonus on the day before your deadline when you overwrite your project by accident...
4) Windows - If you decide you don't like OSX, or if you need access to Windows software for your coursework you'll be able to install Vista (or XP) and run it at full speed via bootcamp. Or stick Parallels (or equivalent software) on OSX and run Windows apps in a virtual machine.
5) Support - depending on where you go to uni you may have an Apple store close enough to use them as your local support centre. If anything goes wrong just take it along. Oh, and your student discount is good on Applecare as well so you'll be able to get three years international support for a hell of a lot less than us regular schlubs.
6) Resale value - once you're done with your course your Apple laptop will still be worth more than the equivalent Windows machine.

At 15 you don't really need portability that much unless you want to take it to the library or work in your living room and stuff.

everybody here has given great reasons for buying a MacBook. My first laptop was a Windows XP Dell. My dad has used Macs for years, but I ended up getting a Windows laptop for games and compatibilty issues (issues that were not only non-existant, but also never ended up being relevant). Within a few months I regretted buying a PC when i saw friends with iBooks. When it came to replace my Dell I bought a black MacBook and have never regretted it.
My fiance was also anti-mac for years, until she used my MacBook. Now her next machine will be a MacBook Pro.
All I can say is just buy it... you'll never regret it.

Get a ride to an Apple Store or find someone using a Mac in public and politely ask them if they would take the time to show you around OS X.
I got asked about my PowerBook so much that I created a guest account just to let people poke around for ten minutes while I answered questions. I see a lot more Apples around campus now than four years ago, I like to think I may have had a small part in that.

I've already tried one out at the WestQuay Southampton, UK Apple Store. I think they are about the most stunning computers i have ever used... in fact about 10 minutes after that I wandered into John Lewis... and tried out a Windows Vista Ultimate PC there... it had a nice UI, and has definitly stolen some Mac OSX features, but the Mac OSX definitly stood out. I mean, like someone else said, its the little things that count. Like I noticed how the icons bounce up and down... its enlightening, its super fast, whereas Windows freezes on a regular and programs crash so often, I even noticed how the screen faded from the iTunes screen into the full screen cover flow page. It truely is stunning... in addition to this, i also realised that the Vista PC i had a go on had security messages poping up every second and it "elegidly" had 20 viruses... and this was a shop pc!
But anyways, i did notice a huge amount of the little things that make such a difference. Obviously i didnt spend ages on the MacBook i was on, i would if i could have, but people would have given me funny looks... damn us british... lol, but from the 10-15 mins i did have on it were about the best 10-15 mins on a computer i have ever had... and im not a PC Geek... lmao

Heh, I love it when it does that. OP, you will NEVER regret buying a Mac. It's everything that counts, the small things and the large things. A Mac will not be slow, and it will last a nice bit longer than a PC (I've heard of iMac G3s still running after 8 years). If your not going to be doing graphically intense things on it, a MB is best, but I just sold my MB for this awesome MBP because of the GPU (and my obsession). The Mac will treat you well, and you will love it. Vista might be flashier, but it runs slow and is just distracting. Macs have appropriate eye candy, so to speak, which just fits in. Buy the MB, you'll love it and it will love you
P.S. I was in the same situation as you. I be 15 for 9 more days, so I can relate.
