Help! I can't change wallpaper and Screen Saver anymore!!!

hi, last night i played around with screen saver setting , i'm trying to use the itunes artwork as screen saver then the "system preferences" crash on me :(
from that time onwards i cant acces "system prefferences > Desttop & screen savers" anymore !
everytime i tried to open it, it says

Now i'm really pissed off cause i can't even change my wall paper anymore .
worst thing is i haven't back up my mac this month :(
is there any solutions ??
or i should re-install all the OSX :(

i already tried to veryfy and repair disk permission, and there's were no error detected.

really really pissed of right now, if somedbodey can help me, please feel free to guide me here, thank you very much.
 
have you you have restarted already? and since everything else is working back up now it is agood idea even if you don't have to reinstall.
 
did you try deleting the preferences files for the desktop/screensaver preferences?

it works now, luckilly im stil at work so i'vent format it yet :p
anyway on /Users/[home folder]/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.screensaver*.plist

there is 3 files:
-com.apple.screensaver.plist
-com.apple.screensaveritunesartwork.plist
-com.apple.screensaversildeshow.plist

i delte all of them, is taht all right ??
 
yep (sorry, that's what i meant by the *).

the truly conservative can just move them to the desktop and return them one at a time to see which one's screwing things, but for the amount of time required to re-input screensaver prefs it's hardly worthwhile. Email account prefs and that kind of thing maybe..
 
hi all first of all thank you so much as now i can acces the "system prefferences>desktop&screensaver " again :p
but i got another problem this time i cant choose to set my screen saver to "computer name" all the other built in wallpaper works fine , but when i tried to choose the "computer name" it bring me to finder instead to preview the screen saver, it's not that important, but quite annoying to knew that 's something isn't working as it supposed to :( so if anyone can help me, i'll be very very gratefull :p

can you check whether you have the file at:
/System/Library/Frameworks/ScreenSaver.framework/Versions/A/Resources/Computer Name.saver

and if so, what happens if you double-click that file, and select "install" (for all users)?
 
Im having similar problems where I can choose a new desktop folder, but the Apple Images (Nature, Plants....) dont show up in my window..

Any help?
 
same symptoms, no files to delete

I was also seeing crashes in system preferences when I tried to change screen savers. I deleted the plist files and that helped some but SOME system prefs still crashes when I click on certain screen savers. I checked my /System/Library/Frameworks/... folder and there are files for ONLY some of the screensavers there. The ones that have files there all work (computer name; pictures folder). Some others that don't exist there also work (Flurry, iTunes artwork, spectrum and word of the day).

Arabesque, RSS Visualizer, and Shell do NOT have files in the specified folder and system prefs crashes EVERY time they are selected in the screensaver panel/tab/whatever it's called.

Can you check Macintosh HD/Library/Desktop Pictures ?
This is in the main Library folder, on your hardrive, at the same level as Users, Applications etc .. not the Library folder in your User folder
Is there a folder there and does it have anything in it?

RSS Visualizer and the rest should be in the HD/System/Library/Screen Savers folder

All of the ones you are having issues with are Quartz screen savers (with a .qtz extension)
These need the file /System/Library/Frameworks/ScreenSaver.framework/Versions/A/Resources/.Quartz Composer.saver

Thanks. I checked in the folders you name and the files exist.

However, I found that all the Quartz screen savers I listed before crash Quartz Composer when they are double clicked. The other 2 (spectrum and word of the day) open fine in quartz composer when I double click them.

The file .Quartz Composer.saver does exist in my /System/Library/Frameworks/ScreenSaver.framework/Versions/A/Resources/ folder. Note to others reading this: files beginning with a period such as ".Quartz Composer.saver" are generally not visible in finder folders. I used a command prompt to navigate to the folder and then executed .Quartz Composer.saver from the command prompt by doing :

open .Quartz\ Composer.saver/

This opened system prefs and asked me if I wanted to install it for 1 user or all. I installed it for the current user but all the 3 problem quartz composer screen savers STILL crash system prefs every time they're selected.

In other news, I happened to look at this on my system because my sister discovered her system prefs were crashing every time she tried to open the screen saver pane. I followed the instructions here to partially solve the problem on her machine so she can at least select some of the screen savers but now I note that her machine behaves exactly the same as mine: the same savers work on both; the same savers crash on both.

She has a 2nd gen MacBook Core Duo w/ 1 gig. I have a later gen black MacBook Core 2 Duo w/ 2 gig. We both have Leopard 10.5.6.

Bizarre. Has Quartz Composer perhaps become broken in the latest OS X update?
 
hmm. Running 10.5.6 here without issue

Haven't used Pacifist enough to know whether it can reinstall components at this level of granularity, but maybe..

Is there anything else (third party) that's loaded on both machines?

I don't know what Pacifist is. The machines should be relatively independent. I live on the west coast, my sister on the east coast. She is visiting and brought hers with her.

Pacifist 2.5.2 is a shareware application that opens Mac OS X .pkg package files, .dmg disk images, and .zip, .tar, .tar.gz, .tar.bz2, and .xar file archives and allows you to extract individual files and folders out of them. This is useful, for instance, if an application which is installed by the operating system becomes damaged and needs to be reinstalled without the hassle of reinstalling all of Mac OS X.

I am having a separate problem with Safari 4 public beta stalling randomly. On advice from a poster in the Apple discussions forum, I installed OnyX for Leopard, ran it to clean my System and User caches. I can't comment yet on whether that fixed my Safari problem, but it DID solve my screensaver crashing problems. I'm happy to report that all screensavers work again.
