I still can't believe Apple's pricing here - never even fathomed the idea of a cross-shop between the 2!

So - upgrading from a 4S. LTE makes upgrading to *something* a no-brainer, IMHO.

The 5S additions/upgrades over the 5/5C leave me a little wanting. Availability concerns also weigh in.

Extra space would be a big plus for me, as I'm always hitting up against the 16GB limit on my 4S.

Anyone facing similar?

I think you should save a little more and get the 32 GB 5S. Seems obvious that you're not convinced with the 5C, and if you know 16 GB won't suffice for a great experience, you have no other reasonable choice.

Not an option. I budgeted for a 16GB 5S, but the 32GB 5C tempts.

Here's my dilemma.... I planned on getting the 32GB 5S. But with AT&T bending me over, I might have to wait until Jan '14. I was eligible for an upgrade at 18 mos. which was Aug '13, but since they implemented this BS Next program, they're saying if I upgrade now, I'll have to join Next.

My argument is that contractually, when I bought my 4S, I was eligible for an 18 month upgrade well before they started Next. Now, they're trying to pull this BS !?! I'm gonna call later & see what shakes out. I need LTE badly.

For OP: Beg, borrow or steal and get the 32 GB. You will need it. The Voice of Wisdom.

If you eat wisely for a month or two you can make up 100 bucks. Maybe its worth it over 2 years.

OK - for a second time, I'm not spending more than 199. Period.

Really, nobody else is thinking along these lines? I've talked with maybe 3 people just in my own circle making this exact judgement.

32gb is a must with such a good device ......
pictures , apps , music 13.2gb will be nothing ..... but 28gb will be nice

You may regret paying 100$ extra for 32gb one but you will regret more if u buy 16 gb one

Here is my opinions.

1. If you replace your iPhone every 1-2 years get the 5C. It'll be cool and the no 64 bit won't hurt you. It is priced way too high though.

2. If you want to keep your new iPhone longer than 1-2 years (And the keynote was screaming this to us), get the 5S.

The 5S just feels like a product that you should be keeping for as long as you can. And it's defo priced like that too.

Comment just does not make sense considering that your about to get locked into a 2 year contract regardless of what you choose that will have you paying around $1500 when it's all said and done.
I've heard this argument for the last 3 years with Apple devices. Apple should have made a iphone 5s 32gig at $200. But their still greedy as ever. Iphone 5c is proof of Apples greed.

It makes perfect sense. Op has a limit to spend on the handset. Pretty sure he has already taken into account the monthly plan.

Why is this so hard to understand? I have a budget for my upgrade, and a budget for my run costs. I'm not comfortable with busting my upgrade budget.

I 1000% agree with you on the 5S 32GB pricing - it's a money grab that it's not 199.

So since you're completely unwilling to even think about paying the extra $100 for the 32GB iPhone 5s your only dilemma is whether to get the 16GB 5s or 32GB 5c. Just get the 32GB 5c. It'll still be an upgrade in every way from what you currently have.

I'm pretty sure you could sell your 4s for close to the price of a 32gb 5s.

Yeah, I've thought of that too. I was so convinced (prior to the announcement) that apple would refactor to 32/64/128 that I was worried about the price my 16GB 4S would command. It may be better now, but I'm still shocked Apple forced a cross-shop on us.

What should have been (IMHO): on-contract:
$0 16GB 5C
99 32 GB 5C (if this even should exist)
199 32 GB 5S
299 64 GB 5S
399 128 GB 5S

its what Im considering. I can probably get about $220-260 to sell my 32gb 4S. Upgrading to a 32gb 5s will be less than $100. OP could probably sell his 16gb 4S and spend use the $199 he had budgeted for an upgrade towards the 32gb 5s

Well what "should" have been the prices is not reality so you're going to have to make a decision. IMHO selling your 4s and upgrading to 32gb 5s is a no brainer and your only option since you have a $200 budget.

Ok....can this thread be closed now?

Gazelle is offering $200 for 16 GB iPhone 4S's. That's what I'm going to do, then use the extra money to buy a 64 GB 5S.
On Craigslist, 16 GBs are going for closer to $300, at least in my area.
