Hi everyone --

I just upgraded from a 32GB 3GS to an iPhone 4 today -- pretty happy overall, but I'm a bit confused about the storage. My 3GS had about 1.5GB free. When I restored the 3GS backup to the iPhone 4, iTunes told me that the new device didn't have enough space to hold all of my music. I had to trim out about 500MB worth of music. After restoring, 100% of my space was used up.

Looking in iTunes, the capacity of the iPhones only differ about 300MB -- I assume that Apple reserved more of the flash capacity for the OS given that the higher res images will take up more space and the additional functionality on the iPhone 4. But then I should've been able to have 1.2GB free and all of my music on the new phone.

The 3GS was already running iOS 4, so I don't think it was an issue there. Also both the 3GS and the 4 have the automatic conversion to AAC 128k set.

Has anyone else seen this when migrating from a 32GB 3GS to a 4? Or even a 16GB 3GS to a 16GB 4. I'm curious as to what's changed that can somehow account for 2GB of space.

Thanks!
