I've had a 32GB iTouch for about a year in a half. A little scratched up on surface, but relatively taken care of. Here's my problem:

A month ago it began to shut off randomly (although charged), and I was able to do a hard reset to get back on it.

NOW, it shuts off randomly, and I cannot even do the hard reset. My only option is to plug it in to my computer and iTunes labels it as in "recovery mode". Everytime it does it's random "shut-off" I have to recover it through the computer, and it's getting annoying and pointless since my whole iTouch is erased now.

I'm imagining this is a software problem, but I also imagine my warranty is up with it being from Dec 2008. Does anyone know how to fix this or is my iTouch on its way to the graveyard?

Put it in DFU mode, then try and restore. You might be able to take it to Apple to see whats wrong.
