Hi, everyone, I don't know much about using bit torrents but I downloaded Tomato Bit Torrent Client. But it doesn't not give an option to pause the download...why?

Which one is better, Tomato or Bittorent?? I'm on Bittorent download client now because it gives the pause download function. But it seems so much slower than Tomato! My download is up to 14kb/sec. Tomato seemed faster.

When I used Bittorent program, my powerbook slows down soooo much!!! So maybe Tomato is better in this way because it does not slow down my powerbook.

Please give me your comments..help...thanks.

xtorrent is the best for mac without a doubt....

but only of you are of corse using it for completly legal reasons.......... like me

For a good Mac interface, with your basic features (including pausing!), check out Transmission.

If you need more advanced features (such as selective file downloading), check out Azureus.

Transmission is best for mac. Now if there was utorrent for mac then it would be different.

I tried transmission a while ago as was a little less than impressed. Perhaps I should give it another try.

However, I have been using Tomato for years and have never been dissatisfied with it. It does have options for incoming/outgoing port, min/max peers, etc. You may not be able to 'pause' it, but under the File menu, you can choose 'Stop Torrent', which effectively is a pause. The window remains open, but downloading stops. Minimize it a continue downloading later. :)

Link to PeerGuardian? I have that running on my Windows computer and I LOVED it. Now, I just need it for my Mac!

Here's the link. Though i dislike the program because it does some weird things, like setting itself to load on login whenever opened and used. If you want to use an IP blocker like PeerGuardian, i would reccomend the Safepeer plugin for Azureus.

Is SafePeer a lot better than PeerGuardian?

SafePeer is PeerGuardian, atleast in a sense that both are IP blockers that get their blocklists from Bluetack. However SafePeer is not a Kernel Extension, nor is it abound with annoying qualities like making itself load on login, as i have mentioned, when run. SafePeer runs only while Azureus runs, as its a plugin for it.

Hmmm. I guess I'll try SafePeer.

Thanks for helping. :)

Quick question, how do I install?

I download and extract. I'm in the plugins folder. What exactly do I put in there? Just the safepeer.jar file?

im not within azureus range right now but I think there is something in one of the menus about plugins or addons, within that should be the choice to download/install PG

PeerGuardian is a must have.
PG is a waste of resources and does not do anything of benefit for torrenting. Said resources would be better spent on being smarter about how you torrent.

I have to put in my 2c, and they would be for azureus <3.0 or rtorrent. I wouldn't go near anything else, possibly even utorrent. Be wary of client bans, most affecting older versions of clients, svn/beta versions, vuze and some versions of utorrent, as well as mainline.

And well, xtorrent...I don't agree with what the dev's done, taking libtransmission and using it in a shareware app, even if that's okay according to the license, so I'd never recommend it.
