According to this article Microsoft have just passed the 88 million mark with Vista:

And Apple just announced that it sold 2 million copies in the first weekend of sales.

Vista is selling at the average rate of a quarter of a million copies a day. Although it is too early to judge the kind of averages OS X can hope to achieve, it will be fun to see the announcements coming out of each camp with updates on their numbers. Go on Steve J. and Steve B. lets have live sales tickers then someone can chart the two against each other. A real twenty-first century deathmatch would occur then.

It would be like clubbin' baby seals for Microsoft Windows...

If you want something to compare, Ubuntu downloads vs Leopard purchases would be more "fair".

I agree with the above poster, comparing these 2 is kinda pointless.

Besides, of the above numbers, let's pull out OEM/corporate business (non-retail) sales and just focus on consumer single license sales and THEN we'll see some true numbers.

OK, lets pretend that XP and Tiger do not exist and that Vista and Leopard are a clean slate. And that everyone is choosing one or the other. Within 2-3 days Leopard sales are 2.27 percent of Vista sales. Apple has taken a significant percentage within a couple of days. Also they are likely to continue strong (higher than average sales) at least for the first month, while Vista sales are trailing off - it sold 20m in the first month and this dropped to around an average of 6m in subsequent months. It is not difficult to imagine the 5 or 6 percent figure, then, that is normally attributed to Mac marketshare climbing much higher in the imaginary Vista- and Leopard-only world. Now this might not see OS X overtake Windows (although stranger things have happened in the tech world), but these sales are by no means insignificant, and as proliferation of the Mac becomes greater more an more people are seeing that it is not such a niche product after all.

I think that both figures (Apple and MS) are based on software and bundled hardware sales - so this is an even measure (or so I believe).

Apple certainly isn't going to ever catch Vista in raw sales, but that's OK. I'm sure they're quite thrilled enough with the fact that they've sold as many copies of Leopard in the first weekend as they did copies of Tiger in its entire first month.
