My pac code wont be with me from vodafone for another 3 or 4 days. Can I just activate and use the number that comes with the iphone for now, and then port my old number over after? Has anyone done this? it's just sat in it's box at the moment :(

I have the same problem, my Pac code hasn't arrived yet. A search of the forum reveals that some people have phoned o2 and they said they can transfer the number after the iPhone is activated

Yes. Just take your PAC code down to an 02 store when you have it and take their number for now. That's what I am doing. Start enjoying your phone in the interim.

You should request your PAC Code to be sent by SMS as well as post, Orange did it for me! ;)

One of the drones in my local o2 store insisted that you HAD TO supply the PAC code during activation on iTunes and couldn't phone up later to initiate the port.

Not sure what to believe now.

Sadly, it is very difficult to get the same answer out of more than one O2 employee, which tends to suggest that most do not have the faintest clue what they're talking about.

However, I have had it confirmed by several that you can use a PAC code after activation (answers ranged from a 14 day limit to a 28 day limit, and then on to no limit at all!).

I tried to use my PAC code at the time of activation but the system couldn't cope with it, so I have to ring customer services (for the umpteenth time) tomorrow to do it manually. I've been assured that this will be alright. Better had be!

You can register (any) 02 phone or sim, and then port your number over later - AFAIK the only time limit is the 30 days that you PAC is valid for.

You can do it on the 02 website here:

02: I want to keep my mobile number

I activated my iPhone on Friday night - but wanted to try it (and 02) for few days before I decide if i'm going to leave Orange for good.

Impressed with CPW

I suddenly realised I needed a PAC code at 9.30pm on Friday night (was on O2, but through Carphone Warehouse!).

Rang CPW on the number which iTunes prompted and low and behold, given my PAC code over the phone! Very impressed :D

Very useful link, many thanks. Personally, I find that the O2 website is more often than not like looking for a needle in a haystack.

I hope that you are not one of those O2 employees that I made derogatory remarks about in my previous post. :)

Can I just check - does the same thing hold for Carphone Warehouse O2 phones? On the CPW website they say that they need the PAC code at the time of purchase, but as it seems that going through them is the surest way to get my hands on an iphone tomorrow, I'd really like it if that wasn't the case. (I'm on Vodafone, have just written to cancel my contract, but have been told to wait for a few days before requesting my PAC code).

Thanks.

Do they not give you the PAC straight away?So the norm is to post it to you? I will certainly be requesting an SMS from Orange, too. God I am getting confused with all this...
